Beyond Beer: The Magazine

Beyond Beer Banner

an art & lit magazine about beer and other important things

Getting a beer is a simple pleasure, but it can serve as the spark for conversation and creativity that know no limits. In this spirit, Imagine Nation Brewing Company created a literary magazine: Beyond Beer. This magazine represents an extension of Imagine Nation’s mission to joyfully address the challenges of our time and fuel social change through celebration and dialogue. Swing into the taproom to check out the first issue.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:

Beyond Beer, Issue 1

Beyond Beer, Issue 1

Issue 2: an art & lit magazine you can spill beer on

Beyond Beer is accepting submissions of short fiction, nonfiction, essay, poetry, and visual art. We welcome submissions from Missoula and beyond. This publication has no borders.

Deadline: May 31, 2017

The prompt is simple: send us written and artistic works that reflect the spirit of craft beer. What does that mean? Well, it’s up to you. The work need not be explicitly about beer. Our first issue saw entries ranging from a personal essay about Peruvian microbreweries to a poem about being hungover in Mongolia to a short story about an affair with Samuel Beckett. Art contributions included wildlife photography, bird/space collages, and cartoonish cowboy nudes that lampoon traditional masculinity. We’re open to almost anything. In the spirit of beer, we’re most interested in work that is casual but refined, bold but nuanced, edgy but in conversation with tradition.

We don’t have a ton of space, so for written works we like short and sweet. A feature submission shouldn’t be more than 5,000 words, but 3,000 is the preferred ballpark. We like to include a variety of voices, so something under 1,000 words is a great length—about a beer’s worth of a read. For visual art, we’re open to any medium, as long as it can be printed (and we do print in color). Photos are great, but don’t just send us your best Instagram pic of a beer. Also, we are suckers for comics. Please indicate if you’d like to be considered for the fiction or nonfiction feature. To be considered for featured visual artist, we’d need a cohesive collection of at least 5 pieces.

Got an idea that’s outside the box? Feel free to pitch it to us. We’ll respond as quickly as we can. Should we ask you to pursue it, you’ll likely still be subject to the submission deadline.

Submission Guidelines:

We will review every submission and respond within 3 months. Unfortunately, we can’t pay contributors. An accepted entry will earn you a free copy of the magazine and a few free beers at the release party if you’re local. Thanks for sharing your work.
